Hand therapy is guided by a skilled occupational therapist or physical therapist who specializes in hand and upper extremity therapy.
The hand therapist works with patients and hand surgeons to establish customized treatment plans to address upper extremity problems. Therapy that may start within days of surgery or injury through the patient’s return to work and/or functional lifestyle.

- Thermal Injuries

- Sprains or Strains
- Nerve Injury or Compression

Postoperative Rehabilitation
- Manage Open or Sutured Wounds (Prevent Infection and Assist Healing)
- Control of Hypertrophic or Hypersensitive Scars
- Reduce Swelling
- Custom Orthosis Fabrication
- Implementation of Clinical Protocols
Preventive, Non-operative or Conservative Treatment
- Manage acute or chronic pain.
- Desensitize following nerve injury or trauma.
- Sensory re-education after nerve injury.
- Design and implement exercise programs to increase motion, dexterity, strength.
- Splint fabrication for prevention or corrections of injury.
- Train in daily life skills through adapted methods and equipment.
- Condition prior to returning to work.
Industry Consultation
Hand therapists consult with various industries establishing preventive programs for workers with cumulative trauma disorders.
