Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network’s Aquatic Therapy program offers benefits to individuals recovering from all phases of injury or illness including post-surgical, non-surgical, orthopedic, rheumatologic, and neurological to chronic pain.
The therapeutic benefits of the water combined with specialized skills of our physical therapists will help you to improve your mobility and function. The warm water assists with muscle relaxation, increases circulation, and assists with balance and trunk stability. You do not have to be a swimmer to participate in or benefit from Aquatic Therapy.
Aquatic therapy is also effective as a tool during the rehabilitation process following a variety of orthopedic surgical procedures.
Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
Exercising in the water, decreases the amount of weight bearing, which reduces the stress placed on the joints. This makes it easier and less painful to perform exercises. Aquatic Therapy provides additional benefits, including:
- Helping to relax muscles that are sore or tight.
- Increased muscle strength. The water provides resistance to strengthen weakened muscles.
- Decreasing abnormal tone, spasticity, and rigidity. Hands on techniques performed in water temperatures above 92 degrees, are effective in creating warmth that reduces increased ton due to a neurological injury.
- Improved balance. The pressure and buoyancy of the water supports your body, which allows increased time to react without the fear of falling.
