History of Pilates (pronounced pi-lah-teez). Pilates is a conditioning technique that has been well known to dancers since the early 1920’s.
Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880, combined elements of yoga, weight training, gymnastics and ancient practices to overcome his own disabilities. His fitness regimen combines stretching and strengthening with a focus on core control. The outcome is improved posture, flexibility, coordination, muscle tone and strength of the whole body.
Who is pilates for?
Although Pilates and GXS training have been popular among dancers, athletes, and celebrities, it is beneficial for individuals of all fitness levels. If there is a concern about a particular injury or diagnosis, ask to speak with one of our trained clinicians and you will be advised on appropriateness and/or modifications that can be made.
Pilates exercises are performed on mats and apparatus such as the Reformer, trapeze table, chair, and ladder barrel. This diverse program of exercise works all muscle groups within the body while promoting proper spinal alignment.
Pilates Mat Classes
Pilates mat classes at Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network (HHCRN) sites are taught by physical therapists, athletic trainers, and fitness specialists certified through Polestar Pilates ™ or Stott® Pilates. Their clinical experience assures a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s specific needs. Small class size allows for individual attention. Mat classes are scheduled in a 10-session series and the cost is $150.00 for the series.
Private Instruction
Private instruction in Pilates and on Pilates apparatus is provided at Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network by appointment. The versatility of Pilates apparatus provides a continuum of exercise, focusing on core while developing strength and flexibility.
Additionally, private instruction on the Gyrontonic Expansion System (GXS) Pulley Tower Combination Unit is also available by appointment. While this method of exercise also focuses on strength, flexibility and core control, its unique pulley system and handle unit places more emphasis on symmetry of muscles and movement.
