Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network’s physical therapists and occupational therapists have specialized training in breast surgery rehabilitation.
The Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Program
A treatment plan will be customized to determine your patient’s appropriate rehabilitation program for a return to function and activity as soon as possible. The program is conducted in phases and you may refer a patient at any point during their care for any phase of the program.
Pre-Surgical Evaluation
- Baseline Information and Measurements.
- Exercise and Lymphedema Education.
Post-Surgery Therapy
- Range of Motion, Strengthening, and Stretching.
- Manual Techniques and Exercise Protocols for the Patient with Reconstruction.

Eligibility
Your patient can benefit from the program if she is unable to perform any of these functional activities.
Right now, can she:
- Place an item in overhead cabinets?
- Fasten her bra in the back?
- Lift a gallon of milk and get it on the top shelf of the refrigerator?
- Push a vacuum cleaner?
- Carry a bag of groceries?
- Push or pull an object such as a heavy door?
- Grasp and hold a coffee cup, steering wheel or doorknob?
- Button a blouse or type on a computer?
Or does she have:
- Swelling in the arm or hand?
- Pain limiting movement or function?
- Loss of strength or range of motion?
