The Program | Eligibility | Referrals & Payment
The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® is an active patient treatment philosophy that emphasizes prevention and intervention, and encourages patients to be in control of their own treatment.
This is very consistent with the treatment philosophy of the therapists at Hartford HealthCare Rehabilitation Network.
The McKenzie Method®
The McKenzie Method®, a clinically proven and scientifically validated method, is divided into three components.
- The assessment phase a logical, cost effective process that allows the therapist to quickly evaluate the patient’s problem, and determine if the patient will benefit from the McKenzie approach.
- The treatment phase gives the patient a series of individualized exercises.
- The prevention phase teaches the patient how to self-treat the current problem and reduce the risk of recurrence and how to rapidly deal with the problems should there be recurrence.

Eligibility
Patients with back and/or neck pain or limitation can benefit from a McKenzie evaluation. Since most spinal pain is believed to be mechanical in nature, most responders will show patterns of response to pain and function, and be classified accordingly. This is a unique classification system and benefits both the patient and practitioner by reducing the need for costly and/or invasive procedures.
